Greyswan hör till en av mina största positiva överraskningar
detta år, deras debut "Thought-Tormented Minds" imponerade
verkligen och skivan har fått väldigt mycket speltid i min
stereo. Jag fick kontakt med sångaren Oscar för att låta
honom berätta lite mer om sitt band och deras debut.
Kan du börja med att presentera dig själv
och bandet för de läsare som inte har hört om Greyswan
tidigare?
Oscar - Greyswan är ett italienskt band som föddes för
ca 6 år sedan. "Thought-Tormented Minds" är vår
första fullängdare, släppt genom Ebony Tears / C.B.I. Records,
efter två självproduktioner, "Demo 2000" och "Promo
2001". Rötterna till vårt sound är tagna från
dunkel tidig heavy metal och 90-talets gothic-doom scen. Vi har försökt
skapa ett originellt sound med att ta inspiration från olika musikstilar,
utan att bli det vanliga klonbandet eller bli ett brokigt band.
Hur har reaktionerna på er debut "Thought-Tormented
Minds" varit och är du nöjd med albumets slutresultat?
Finns det något du skulle vilja ändra eller förbättra
på albumet?
Oscar - Vi är till 200 % nöjda med tanke på den budget
vi hade tillgänglig! Hur som helst, om vi hade haft mer tid till
förfogande skulle vi ha lagt mer tid på arrangemangen, vi skulle
dock inte ha ändrat på vårt materials grund, eftersom
vi alltid har haft en stark tro på våra låtar. På
nästa album säger jag dig kanske att detta album var fruktansvärt…!
Vi gick in i studion med en väldigt bra kunskap om våra låtar,
mycket av tiden vi spenderade var exklusivt för post-produktion samt
lyssnande på albumet, vilket är väldigt viktigt då
man producerar ett album.
Sången "Sleepless Night" fanns
ursprungligen på er promo från 2001, men ni spelade in låten
på nytt för er debut. Varför valde ni att inkludera just
denna låt på albumet och vilka ändringar kan hittas på
den nya versionen av låten?
Oscar - "Sleepless Night" är en slags bro som länkar
ihop "gamla" Greyswan med de nyare och den blev komponerad under
en väldigt specifik period, det är därför vi är
så fäst vid låten. Och det är även en mycket
vacker låt! Det finns bra sånger i vårt gamla material,
men de reflekterar oss inte längre. Vi tycker att ändringarna
i den nya versionen kommer av det nya sound som spelas av de nya medlemmarna.
Det skulle inte ha varit en bra idé att i en fullängdare inkludera
en låt som är inspelad i en annan studio och under ett tidigare
skede.
Albumet blev inspelat vid Only Music Studio tillsammans
med producenten Carlo Miori. Varför valde ni denna studio och är
du nöjd med slutresultatet? Vad tycker du har varit den största
skillnaden mellan denna inspelning och då ni spelade in era demo
skivor? Är det endast den finansiella situationen eller finns det
andra olikheter?
Oscar - Vi var glada för att vi fick spela in albumet vid Only Music
Studio! Vårt skivbolag gav oss inget påbud när det kom
till valet av studio… Gianlucas gitarrlärare föreslog
studion åt oss. Det är en helt ny studio, med de bästa
och uppdaterade inspelningsteknologin.
Vår producent och ljudingenjör, Carlo Miori, är en professionell
person och en strålande musiker, examinerad i orgel och keyboards.
Dessa inspelningssessioner har varit en nödvändig "etapp"
för oss, speciellt att arbeta med elektronik och tekniker som sällan
används på metal album.
Vi är till 100 % nöjda med studio arbetet. I Only Music Studio
har vi arbetat i en mer avslappnad och vänlig atmosfär än
tidigare.
Hur föds en sång inom Greyswan? Vem
skriver vad och när? Varifrån kommer inspirationen både
för musiken och texterna? Kan du kortfattat berätta vad låtarna
på albumet handlar om?
Oscar - En sång är något som är uppbyggt både
av text och musik, dessa två element föds och dör tillsammans
i den. Texten utrycker i ord alla de känslor som musiken väcker
inom oss. Troligtvis är det just av denna orsak som våra texter
inte handlar om sol, hav och flickor i bikini och således är
vår musik långsam och melankolisk. Det är svårt
att beskriva Greyswan's kompositions process. Varje sång kunde bli
född vilken stund som helst av varje medlems enskilda idé.
Jag tycker att våra texter är helt enkelt normala reflektioner
som var och en av oss har gjort minst en gång i våra liv.
Alla kan tolka dem som man själv föredrar, helt enligt ens egna
känslor och erfarenheter. Vi är inte direkt muntra, men vi tycker
att det är väldigt helande att framlägga sina känslor
genom musiken.
Albumet är inte enbart er första, utan
även det första albumet som släpps genom Ebony Tears. Vad
har ni för tankar om det och har ni känt någon press p.g.a.
denna väldigt ovanliga händelse? Hur kom ni i kontakt med Ebony
Tears och är ni nöjda med samarbetet så här långt?
Finns det någon chans att ert kontrakt med skivbolaget kommer att
förlängas med ytterligare utgivningar?
Oscar - Det fanns ingen press från skivbolaget… Vi beslöt
att skriva kontrakt med Ebony Tears eftersom vi har känt CBI's ägare
personligen och de verkade vara väldigt pålitliga personer,
vi är väldigt självsäkra om beslutet vi tog. Vi kom
i kontakt med Henri och Rogier genom Marco från The Wounded…
Han är en vän till oss och vet att Greyswan ligger nu i skuld
till honom!! Vi kan inte bedöma C.B.I./Ebony Tears arbete ännu…
"Thought-Tormented Minds" har bara varit ute på marknaden
ett par månader och de arbetar hårt med att marknadsföra
vårt material, de hjälper oss att få kontakt med tidningar
och webzines för intervjuer och vi kommer att läsa många
recensioner. Vår framtid hänger på de resultat vi får.
Oscar - Av många orsaker lämnade dessa tre personer bandet och många av dem är för personliga för att förklaras. Splittringen gav kanske ett visst tvivel om den troliga framtiden för Greyswan, men viljan att fortsätta gav nytt liv åt kompositionen och på det personliga planet, då Greyswan är en viktig del av vårt liv.
Federico och Lucia blev ersatta
av Paolo (gitarr) och Marcello (bas), men ni har fortfarande ingen ny
keyboardist. Hur kom ni i kontakt med Paolo och Marcello och är
det ett medvetet beslut att inte ta in en ny keyboardist eller söker
ni fortfarande efter en?
Oscar - Både Paolo och Marcello var vänner till oss och de
spelade redan i ett flertal band vi kände till. Vi anser att det
är så svårt att fatta beslut med fem medlemmar, så
vi har inte sökt efter någon annan keyboardist…Då
vi har spelat under den senaste tiden, så har vi förstått
att keyboards inte är så viktigt för vårt sound.
Varför valde ni namnet Greyswan
och vad betyder det för er? Någon historia bakom namnet?
Oscar - Vi kommer inte ihåg vem som valde namnet… det skedde
för många år sedan. Greyswan är det bästa
sättet att beskriva med två ord vår musikaliska färd.
Valet av denna färg refererar till det fysiska - metafysiska vågstycket
av Arthur Rimbaud, en fransk poet från 1800-talet, som ville utforska
det "okända". Det är den förmodade verkligheten,
en gömd verklighet jämförd med den existerande kulturen,
som till synes är ouppnåelig med de kognitiva redskap som
människan har till förfogande. Det viktigaste av dessa kognitiva
redskap är språket som är baserad på en dualistisk
struktur. Så, det är bara det dualistiska hindret som förhindrar
tillträdet till det "okända". Språket vi använder
(och därmed även det sätt som vi tänker) är
baserat på motsatta par, Gott och Ont, Gud och Satan, Himlen och
Helvetet, himlen och jorden o.s.v. och det "okända" är
belägen i mitten av allt detta, det finns mellan materia och ande,
kropp och själ. Eftersom svart och vitt i färgsymbolismen
representerar de motsatta polerna i detta dualistiska system, så
tycker vi att det bästa sättet att representera detta "okända"
är att blanda dessa två färger, alltså grått.
Svan: symbolen för renhet och oförorenat, skönhet och
frihet, på ett figurativt sätt anger i litteraturen en poet
eller en musiker. Enligt legenden så är "svansång"
den melodiösa sång som utges av en döende svan…
kanske den samma svan som lämnar verkligheten för att nå
det "okända".
Vad gör ni killar (yrke,
intressen o.s.v.) då ni inte spelar i Greyswan? Har du eller någon
annan i bandet något annat band eller projekt?
Oscar - Hittills så har Greyswan sett musiken som en stor underhållning,
både som musiker och lyssnare. Vi har alla viktigare sysselsättningar,
båda gitarristerna är examinerade så de är väldigt
upptagna just nu, de andra arbetar och studerar… Vi vet att det
är svårt, men vi önskar att leva med musiken någon
dag. Det finns ett par sidoprojekt, men de är alla topphemliga!!
Eftersom ni började er musikaliska
karriär som ett coverband, vilken låt tycker du att ni har
lyckats bäst med att göra en cover på? Finns det någon
chans att de gamla cover låtarna kommer någonsin att spelas
in och släppas på något kommande album? Vilka är
dina favoritband?
Oscar - Under de senaste åren så har Greyswan inte spelat
en enda cover song live på scen, utom den gången då
vi experimenterade med att spela en cover på Anathema's låt
"One Last Goodbye", men vi kom fram till att vi gör vårt
bästa endast med våra egna låtar… Vi vet inte
vad som kommer att hända i framtiden rörande dessa saker.
Varje medlem i Greyswan lyssnar på en stor variation av olika
band och alla kan personligen älska samtidigt Europe eller Tool,
Nuclear Assault eller Sigur Ros, Sisters Of Mercy eller Area. Vi är
charmerade av dunkel musik… band som My Dying Bride, Black Widow,
High Tide, The Cure, Bauhaus, Katatonia och Anathema är väldigt
viktiga för vår stilistiska bakgrund.
Vad är era planer för
framtiden? Är några konserter planerade och när kan
vi vänta oss något nytt material av Greyswan?
Oscar - Vi vill göra live versionen av vårt album "Thought-Tormented
Minds" känt för så många människor som
möjligt, dessutom håller vi på att skriva nya sånger.
Möjligheten att vara på turné är upplivande för
oss och vi skulle vara stolta över att få vara gäster
i länder där musik verkligen uppskattas och inte enbart anses
vara en pengamaskin… I Italien är det väldigt svårt
att spela live… vi hoppas att någon i Europa skulle upptäcka
Greyswan.
Och slutligen, en klassisk fråga.
Varför korsade kycklingen vägen?
Oscar - Kanske korsade kycklingen vägen eftersom han kan möta
ett par fina hönor på andra sidan…

Perhaps, at our next album I will tell you that "Thought-Tormented Minds" was horrible…!
Greyswan is one of my most positive surprises
this year, their debut "Thought-Tormented Minds" really impressed
me and the record has got a lot of playing time in my stereo. I got in
contact with the bands vocalist Oscar, to let him tell a bit more about
his band and their debut.
Could you begin with presenting yourself and
the band for the readers that haven't heard about Greyswan before?
Oscar - Greyswan is an Italian band born about 6 years ago. "Thought-Tormented
Minds" is our first full-length album, out for Ebony Tears / C.B.I.
Records, after two self-productions: "Demo 2000" and "Promo
2001". The roots of our sound are taken from obscure early heavy
metal and the 90s gothic-doom scene, but we have tried to create an original
sound taking inspiration from different musical genres, without becoming
the usual clone-band or miscellaneous-band.
How has the response been on your debut album
"Thought-Tormented Minds" and are you happy with how the album
turned out to be? Anything you would like to change or improve with the
album?
Oscar - We are 200% satisfied, considering our available budget! Anyway,
if we had had more time at our disposal, we would have taken care more
of the arrangement; we wouldn't have modified our work at the basis, though,
because we have always strongly believed in our songs. Perhaps, at our
next album I will tell you that this one was horrible…! We entered
the studio with a very good knowledge of our songs; much time spent was
exclusively for post-production and, very important for the production
of an album, the listening of the CD.
The song "Sleepless Night" was originally
on your promo from 2001, but you have re-recorded it for your debut. Why
did you choose to include this particular song on the album and what changes
can be found on the new version of the song?
Oscar - "Sleepless Night" is a sort of bridge which links the
"old" Greyswan to the new ones and it was composed in a very
particular period; that's why we are so bound to it. And it's such a beautiful
song, too!! From our old material there are good songs, but they don't
reflect us anymore. We think that changes in this last version come from
the different sound played by the new members. It wouldn't have been a
good idea to include in a full-length cd a song recorded in a different
studio and in a former time.
The album was recorded at the Only Music Studio
together with the producer Carlo Miori. Why did you choose this studio
and are you happy with the outcome? What do you feel has been the biggest
difference between this recording and when you recorded your demos? Is
it just the financial situation or are there more differences?
Oscar - We were pleased to record at Only Music Studio! Our label didn't
make any imposition as far as the choice of the studio was concerned at
all... This studio had been suggested to us by Gianluca's guitar-teacher.
It is a brand-new studio, with the best and updated technologies for recording.
Our producer and sound engineer, Carlo Miori, is a professional person
and a great musician, graduated on Organ and Keyboards. These recording
sessions have been an essential "stage" for us, especially working
with electronics and techniques hardly used in metal albums.
We are 100% satisfied of studio work. In Only Music studio we have worked
in a more relaxed and friendly way then in the past.
How does a song get born in the Greyswan camp?
Who writes what and when? Where does the inspiration come both for the
music and the lyrics? Can you please tell briefly what the songs on the
album are about?
Oscar - A song is something made of both lyrics and music; these two elements
are born and die together in it. Lyrics express with words all the feelings
that music stirs up in us. Probably it's just for this reason that our
songs don't speak of sun, sea and girls with bikini and therefore our
music is slow and melancholic. It's difficult to explain Greyswan's composition
process. Every song could be born in every moment from any member's single
idea. I think our lyrics are simply normal reflections each of us has
made at least once in his/her own life. Everybody can interpret them the
way he prefers, according to his own feelings or experiences; you can
hardly say we are so cheerful, but we think that relieving one's feeling
through the music is very healing.
The album is not only your first one; it's also
the first album to be released by Ebony Tears. What do you think about
that and have you felt any kind of pressure due to this very rear happening.
How did you get in contact with Ebony Tears and are you happy with the
collaboration so far? Any chance that your deal with the label will be
prolonged with additional releases?
Oscar - There were not any kind of pressures from the label ... We have
decided to sign for Ebony Tears because we have known the leaders of CBI
personally and they seemed to be very reliable people, we are confident
of the choice we made. We got in touch with Henri and Rogier through Marco
from The Wounded … He's a friend of ours and he knows Greyswan are
in dept to him!! We can't judge C.B.I./Ebony Tears' work yet… We
are still in the first months of "Thought-Tormented Minds" availability;
they are working hard to promote our stuff, they get us in touch with
magazines and webzines for interviews and we are going to read a lot of
reviews. Our future will depend on the results we'll get.
Big changes in the bands line up occurred
in the end of 2001, when Federico (guitar), Lucia (bass) and Francesco
(keyboards) parted ways with the band. What was the reason for this split
up and did you ever think that that would be the end for the band?
Oscar - For many reasons these three members decided to leave the band,
and many of them are so personal to explain. Maybe that split has brought
some doubts about the probable future of Greyswan, but the will to continue
gave new life into composition and personal stage, as Greyswan are an
important part of our lives.
Federico and Lucia were replaced
by Paolo (guitar) and Marcello (bass), but you still don't have a new
keyboard player. How did you get in contact with Paolo and Marcello and
is it a conscious decision not to have a new keyboard player or are you
still searching for one?
Oscar - Both Paolo and Marcello were friends of ours and they already
played in several bands we knew. We believe that it is so difficult to
take decisions among five members, so we haven't looked for any other
keyboard player... As long as we have played in these last times, we have
understood that keyboards are not so essential for our sound.
Why did you choose the name Greyswan and what
does it mean to you? Any story behind the name?
Oscar - We don't remember who chose the name ... it happened many years
ago; Greyswan is the best way to describe with two words our musical trip:
the choice of this colour refers to the physical - metaphysical enterprise
of Arthur Rimbaud, a French poet from 19th century, who wanted to explore
the "unknown", that is the supposed reality, a hidden reality
compared to the existing culture, seemingly unattainable with the cognitive
instruments at a human being's disposal. The most important of these cognitive
instruments is the language, based on a dualistic structure. Now, it's
just the dualism obstacle that prohibits access to the "unknown".
The language we use (therefore the way we think, too) is based on opposed
pairings: Good and Evil, God and Satan, Heaven and Hell, sky and earth,
etc. and the "unknown" is situated in the middle of all this,
that is between matter and spirit, body and soul. Since in colour symbolism,
black and white represent the opposite poles of this dualistic system,
the mixing of the two, meaning grey- seems to us the best way to represent
this "unknown". Swan: symbol of purity and uncontamination,
beauty and freedom, in a figurative way denotes in literature, a poet
or a musician. "Swan song", according to the legend, is that
melodious song that is released by the dying swan.... maybe that same
swan which leaves this reality to reach the "unknown".
What do you guys do (occupation, interests etc.)
when not playing in Greyswan? Do you or any of the other members in the
band have any other bands or projects?
Oscar - Until now, Greyswan consider music as a great entertainment, both
as musicians and listeners. All of us have a more important occupation:
the two guitarists are graduands and so they are very busy in this period,
the others work and study ... We know it's difficult, but we wish to live
with our music someday. There are a couple of side-projects, but it's
all top-secret!!
Since you began your musical career as a cover
band, what song do you think you have managed to do the best cover on?
Any chance that those old cover songs will ever be recorded and released
on a future album? Which are your favourite bands?
Oscar - In the last years, Greyswan have never played cover songs on live
stage, except only one time: we experiment to cover Anathema's "One
Last Goodbye", but we found out that we give our best only with our
songs ... We don't know what will happen in future about it. Each member
of Greyswan listens to a great variety of bands and everyone personally
can love at the same time Europe or Tool, Nuclear Assault or Sigur Ros,
Sisters of Mercy or Area. We are charmed by obscure music… bands
like My Dying Bride, Black Widow, High Tide, The Cure, Bauhaus, Katatonia
and Anathema are so important for our stylistic background.
What are your plans for the future? Any gigs
planned and when can we expect some new material from Greyswan?
Oscar - We mean to make our album "Thought-Tormented Minds"
in live version be known by as many people as possible; moreover, we are
composing new songs. The opportunity to be on tour is exhilarating for
us and we'll be proud to be guests of countries where music is really
appreciated and it's not only considered merely a machine to make money
... In Italy it's very difficult to play live ... we hope that someone
in Europe could notice Greyswan.
And finally, a classical question. Why did the
chicken cross the road?
Oscar - Maybe the chicken crossed the road because on the other side he
can meet a couple of good hens ...
