English version
COCKROACH
The German Thrash Metal band Cockroach is now on their
third album and eleventh year. The band is however not that well-know
so I contacted the vocalist Frank Geue to hear about the situation one
of the world's most famous bug is in at the moment.
Could you first present yourself and the band for the readers that
haven't heard Cockroach and tell a little bit about the bands history?
Frank - Cockroach was founded in March 1992 by me, Ulrich Mewes (both
guitars) and Alexander Reichelt (drums). With this line up we started
working on song material. During that period we found a suitable vocalist
named Rainer Striegel. While working on the first songs the bands style
started to develop into Thrash Metal with strong Death Metal influences.
Nevertheless, the Cockroach style can't easily be put into a certain category
cause it will always keeps a very personal touch and character.
Kralle (bass) joined the band in 1995. Up to this time the band had gotten
lots of live experiences. First rehearsal demo tapes were recorded and
Cockroach began working on a promo cd.
In 1996 the singer left the band and I had to fill in this part. I did
my job so good that at the end of the year the band was able to record
their first album "Fi(r )st" at Nightmare Studios in Fautspach,
Germany.
In April 1997 the demo cd "Fi(r )st" was released (available
for only 9 Euro, incl. porto, contact addresses at the end of the interview)
.
In October 1997 Cockroach made their appearance on the "Out Of The
Box Vol. II" compilation (Black Mark Production) with the "Song
In(sected)" from the first album.
Participating at the American festival Jam Fest '98 in Leinfelden - Echterdingen
in Germany, Cockroach was the winner of a contest out of 30 bands.
Kralle left the band in October 1998 and was replaced by the new bass
player Juergen Kimmel.
Late in July 99 Cockroach proudly presented their second album "No
Compromise", which was recorded at Sub Zero Studios in Backnang,
Germany (available for only 20 DM incl. porto, contact addresses at the
end of the interview).
Late in 1999 Juergen left the band and was replaced by the new bass player
Timo Flöther in January 2000.
In April 2001 the recordings of the 3rd release "Temple of Mystery"
(recorded at Sub Zero Studios, Backnang/Germany) begun and it was released
in February 2003 through Supreme Chaos Records.
Please tell me a little bit about your latest release
"Temple Of Mystery". How has the response been on that album
so far and what do you personally think about the album?
Frank - The response is from good to very good. But some people don't
understand that music isn't a product only for one time or epoch. So some
reviews say that our sound is 20 years too late
I think that's nonsense, cause music is timeless and we are not a band
that makes our stuff from commercial aspects.
I think that the roots of Thrash Metal are in the 80's but what's the
problem with doing this music now? I think there is no problem. We like
this music and I think there are enough fans too, which like this kind
of music
The album was mixed by Alexander Krull from the band
Atrocity. How did you come in contact with him and why was he the right
man for the job?
Frank - Atrocity is band from our area and one of my friends stays in
contact with Alexander Krull. The band that my friend plays in produced
their album in Alexander's studio and when I heard the result of the production
on their album, I was very surprised and astonished about how good their
stuff sounded. Our studio work was however finished but I told the rest
of the members in Cockroach about it and we decided to mix our album at
Mastersound Studios. I think it was a very good decision we took to mix
at this studio.
Who of you writes the songs and how does a song get
born? Are the lyrics important for you and where do you get your inspiration
to the lyrics?
Frank - To write the songs is my part. We decided to write our lyrics
mostly in English cause the language sounds much better than German. And
you simply have a better chance to describe things in a shorter way.
The lyrics are content of the music and sometimes we have some joke lyrics
with a touch of irony and in others we have lyrics that discusses political
questions. For example, one song is directed against the fascism (2nd
song on the album "No Compromise") and another one is directed
against war ("Personal War" on the album "Temple Of Mystery")
and so on
There are many people who are interested in the contents of a bands lyrics.
So it is very important for us to show those people how we are thinking
about certain themes.
But we are however not a band that wants to make the world better, we
only want to take a position in certain issues.
How did you come up with the name Cockroach?
Frank - It was very difficult to find the right name for us of course,
cause everybody in the band didn't agree with the name-proposal that some
of us came up with. So after a while we decided to take an English dictionary
to find our name and after 666 tries we all agreed with the name COCKROACH.
You have been playing Thrash Metal for quite a long
time now and if you would compare "Temple Of Mystery" with the
early stuff you made, what has been the biggest change in the music?
Frank - I think the in general our music doesn't make big changes, so
that you can't say that the music is much more different than it was on
the previous releases. I think our song writing is nowadays more straightforward
and the songs became more mature. In live shows we saw that the people
moshes more to the newer stuff cause it grooves better.
How did you get in contact with Supreme Chaos Records
and are you happy with the co-operation?
Frank - We applied for working together with Supreme Chaos Records, cause
the label is a young, dynamic and works straight forward. So I think our
decision was very lucky.
What are your musical influences, both metal and non-metal?
Frank - I think our influences are in the Thrash/Death Metal. But we have
no direct idol band; we don't want to be a copy of anyone. Our aim is
to be unique but that's very difficult, cause everybody compares us with
bands like Slayer, Testament and so on
What do you do except play in Cockroach? Do you think
is difficult to combine work/studies/family with being in a band and all
that goes with that?
Frank - We all have a job and the music is our hobby. But we spend much
time with our music, cause we want to make music as professionally as
we can. So it's no question for us if it's difficult or not, cause we
want to do that and pay therefore any price. A big dream... only to make
music with no other engage.
Do you think it's more difficult or easier to get
known when your live in a country that is one of biggest, if not the biggest,
"metal nation" in the world?
Frank - Maybe, but that is not important for us. It's difficult to take
influence to such things cause you need the right persons at the right
time at the right place and the necessary luck. We create our stuff and
hope that the people like it and sometimes maybe we become a well-known
band and can play with great bands like Slayer, Testament and Anthrax,
which people compares us with sometimes.
What are your plans for the future? Any upcoming gigs
and when can we expect a new album?
Frank - We play gigs as much we can. And our aim is to play sometimes
at a big open air like for example Wacken, Full Force and Dynamo or to
get to support a well-known band on a tour.
A new album is at the moment not planned cause first we have to promote
our new album and we hope to get our chance.
And finally, a classical question. Why did the chicken
cross the road?
Frank - Cause Cockroach played cross the road. And the cockroach fans
rushed to the other side so the chicken had no other choice....
Thank you for the interview. The final words are yours.
Frank - First of all we thank you for the interview with your magazine.
We want to say to all people of the world that they should check out our
stuff and feel free to contact the band. We try to response every request.
