CASTRUM
Det ukrainska bandet Castrum har för ett par månader sedan släppt sin andra fullängdare på Bloodbucket Productions. Jag kontaktade bandets sångare och gitarrist Cornelius för att få reda på lite mer om min första kontakt med den ukrainska metal scenen.

Kan du börja med att berätta för de läsare som inte har hört Castrum hurudan musik ni spelar och lite om bandets historia?
Cornelius - Javisst! Vår musik kan beskrivas som en blandning av aggressiv och hatfull death metal men p.g.a. de medeltida texterna så vill vi kalla det medeltida death metal. Förr använde vi prefixet "Gothic Brutal" men med tiden så har det dött ut p.g.a. den stora mängd gothic band, vilka inte riktigt faller mig i smaken så det förlorade sin väsentlighet i vår musik. Kort och gott så står Castrum för death metallens innersta natur på det sätt som det var meningen att det skulle vara!!! Castrum steg in i mörkret år 1994. Fram till nu har vi släppt följande material: "Burial Of The Affection" (repetitions demo 1996), "Flames By Impiety" (studio demo 1996), "Pleasure In The Deeds Of Horror" (studio demo 1996), "The Leading Spirit Of Medieval Tortures" (compilation MC 1999), "Hatenourisher" (CD 2001) och "Mysterious Yet Unwearied" (CD 2002).

Hur har reaktionerna varit på ert nyaste album "Mysterious Yet Unwearied" och vad tycker du själv om albumet?
Cornelius - Reaktionerna har helt enkelt varit strålande! Vi är väldigt glada över att "Mysterious…" blev till vad det är. Med tiden så är man inte givetvis belåten med allt på albumet men det är man själv som utvecklas och man söker alltid efter nya formuleringar och musikaliska lösningar. Jag tycker att "Mysterious…" är det album som bäst karaktäriserar vad vi egentligen är, dvs. Castrums egen stil.

På ert debutalbum "Hatenourisher" var sångtexterna inspirerade av häxprocesserna i Europa under medeltiden men på "Mysterious…" är texterna inte speciellt historiska. Varför denna ändring och kan du berätta lite mer om texterna? Jag är speciellt intresserad i texten på låten "Suffocating Thugs".
Cornelius - Exakt! Förändringen kom helt naturligt. Jag hade endast en sångtext skriven för "Mysterious…" och det var "Suffocating Thugs" och jag hade inte tid att skriva de andra. Så jag frågade en god vän till mig om han kunde skriva resten av texterna till "Mysterious Yet Unwearied". Majoriteten av texterna på "Mysterious Yet Unwearied" berättar om bl.a. olika skräckliknande historier, utomjordiska objekt och mystiska visioner. I några av texter kan man hitta paralleller till Necronomicon-liknande berättelser, men utan förkroppsligande och utan konkreta historier. "Suffocating Thugs" är den enda låten som har något att göra med den medeltida historien. Den behandlar KALI's blodtörstiga kult och ger så att säga en god inblick i striden mellan det goda och det onda. Den var även ett allvarligt hot mot främlingar i Indien. Så det är en ganska trevlig historia att läsa om, ha-ha…


Vem är det som skapar sångerna (och skriver texterna) och varifrån kommer inspirationen?
Cornelius - Det är till största delen jag som skapar allt i en sång, alltså gitarr styckena, bas noterna och ibland även skelettet till trummornas stycken. Då jag har en låt klar så börjar jag lära dom andra den. Slutligen så arrangerar vi den tillsammans. Vad gäller texterna så skrevs de tidigare först efter att vi hade klart låtarna musikaliskt, nuförtiden så är det dock tvärtom. Alltså jag har texterna klara innan själva låtarna är skapade. Nuförtiden är det en god vän till mig, Innominandus, som skriver texter åt oss och han är inspirerad av många saker, det kan vara Necronomicon, det kan vara historia eller det kan vara Metal, för att nämna några exempel.

Om du skulle jämföra "Mysterious…" med ert tidigare material, vad tycker du att har ändrat mest?
Cornelius - Jag tycker att bandets attityd har ändrat mest. Vi blev mer professionella på "Mysterious…" om jag kan säga så plus att vi spenderade tusentals mera tid på att få "Mysterious…" till vad det är. Alltså vi repeterade och tränade så mycket som var möjligt.

Varför valde ni namnet Castrum (vilket betyder "befäst plats" på latin)?
Cornelius - Vi använder det namnet p.g.a. dess starka koppling till vårt textmässiga koncept, vilka behandlar häxjakten, heliga inkvisitionen och medeltida saker i allmänhet. Översatt från latin så betyder "castrum" fort, torn, slott etc. Men vi använder det som häx-torn. Den andra orsaken är att det är det gamla namnet på den stad vi lever i (Castrum Ungh)

Vilka är dina favoritband (både metal och icke metal) och hur har de inspirerat dig i ditt skapande av musik?
Cornelius - De huvudsakliga musikaliska inflytelserna för Castrum kommer från Thrash och Death Metal stilar. Till exempel band som Destruction, Sodom, Kreator, Holy Moses, Necronomicon, Hypocrisy, Dissection, At The Gates, Morbid Angel, Asphyx, Dismember, Kataklysm, Death, Grave, Necrophobic, Vader och Cryptopsy för att nämna några har haft stort inflytande på oss. Vi beundrar och respekterar dessa band men du måste förstå att vi inte kopierar eller låter som någon av dem. Vi skapar vår egen musik och försöker vara så originella som möjligt.

Metal band från Ukraina är inte speciellt vanliga. Varför tror du det är så och hur ser metal scenen ut idag?
Cornelius - Tycker du verkligen det? Jag skulle säga att scenen i Ukraina växer dagligen. Det finns många begåvade band här. För att nämna några: Nokturnal Mortum (Black Metal), Mental Demise (Brutal Death Metal), Xul (Ond Death/Black Metal), Phantasmagory (Progressiv Death Metal), Lucifugum (Black Metal), Astrofaes (Black Metal), Tessaract (Death Metal), Runes Of Dianceht (Black Metal), Fleshgore (Death Metal), Datura (Brutal Death Metal), m.fl. Alla spelar de musik med hög kvalité.
Vilken konsert är den bästa ni har gjort hittills?
Cornelius - Det har blivit gjort många bra konserter hittills, till exempel den senaste i Uzhgorod (29.12.2002) men jag tycker att vi ska vänta på den bästa ännu en tid.

Vad gör ni förutom att spela i Castrum?
Cornelius - Alla arbetar vi på olika platser. Vår trummis är en musiklärare i Ungern, vår basist är en husbyggare i Tjeckien och endast jag arbetar här i Uzhgorod. Just nu arbetar jag som ingenjör på institutet för elektron fysik.

Vad är era planer för framtiden? Några konserter planerade och när kan vi vänta oss ett nytt album av Castrum?
Cornelius - Just nu jobbar vi med nytt material. Vi har ungefär sex nya låtar vilka är ganska snabba och aggressiva Death Metal melodier. Jag kan definitivt säga att vår musik har blivit en mer teknisk och brutal form av Death Metal. Apropå det nya albumet så kommer det att vara textmässigt ett koncept album givetvis. Det är för tidigt att säga när den kommer att släppas, dock kan jag gissa på slutet av 2003.

Och slutligen, en klassisk fråga. Varför korsade kycklingen vägen?
Cornelius - Kanske kycklingen var för full och allt spårade ur, ha-ha…

CASTRUM
The Ukrainian band Castum have released their second full-length album a couple of moths ago on Bloodbucket Productions. I contacted the bands singer and guitarist Cornelius to get to know a little bit more about my first contact with the Ukrainian metal scene.

Could you first tell the readers that haven't heard Castrum what kind of music you play and a little bit of the band's history?
Cornelius - Sure! Our music can be described as a mix of aggressive and hateful Death Metal, but due to the historical lyrics, we like to call it Medieval Death Metal. Formerly we used to describe our sound with the "Gothic Brutal" prefix, but with time it simply died out due to the gothic wave bands, which style is really not my cup of tea, and lost its essential meaning towards our music. All in all, Castrum stands for the pure essence of Death Metal, the way it was supposed to be!!! The origins of Castrum came to darkness in September of 1994. Until now we have released the following materials: "Burial of the Affection" (rehearsal demo 1996), "Flames by Impiety" (studio demo 1996), "Pleasure in the Deeds of Horror" (studio demo 1996), "The Leading Spirit of Medieval Tortures" (compilation MC 1999), "Hatenourisher" (CD 2001) and "Mysterious Yet Unwearied" (CD 2002).

What has been the reaction on your newest album "Mysterious Yet Unwearied" and what do you think about the album?
Cornelius - The reaction is simply great! We are really happy that "Mysterious..." turned out the way it is. Of course, with time you aren't content with everything on it, but it's like you progress and you will always be searching for new formulas and musical solutions. I think that "Mysterious..." is the album that characterizes the best what we are all about, i.e. the own style of Castrum.

On your debut album "Hatenourisher" the lyrics were influenced by the witchcraft trials in medieval Europe but on "Mysterious..." the lyrics aren't that historical. Why the change and can you tell me a little bit about the lyrics? I'm especially interested in the lyrics on the song "Suffocating Thugs".
Cornelius - Right! This change came just natural. I mean I had only one text written for "Mysterious..." that is "Suffocating Thugs" and didn't have the time to write other ones. So I asked a good friend of mine to write the rest of the lyrics for "Mysterious Yet Unwearied". The majority of the lyrics on "Mysterious Yet Unwearied" tells about different horror-like stories, unearthly objects, mystical visions, etc. In some lyrics you can find the parallel to the Necronomicon-kind of stories, but without personification and without concrete tales. "Suffocating Thugs" is the only song that has something to do with medieval history. It deals with the bloodthirsty sect of KALI and gives a good insight into the war between the good and evil so to say. It meant a serious danger for the strangers in India too. So it's a pretty nice story to read about, ha-ha...


Who makes the songs (and write the lyrics) and were does the inspiration come from?
Cornelius - Mainly I compose everything for a song; I mean the guitar parts, bass lines and sometimes the skeletons for the drum parts as well. When I have a song completed then I begin to teach it to others. And finally we arrange it together. Regarding the lyrics, earlier they were written after we had completed the songs musically, but nowadays it works inversely. I mean I have lyrics before the actual songs are created. Nowadays a very good friend of mine, Innominandus, writes us the lyrics and he inspired by lots of things, be it Necronomicon, be it history or be it Metal, for example.

If you would compare "Mysterious..." with your earlier material what do you think have changed the most?
Cornelius - I think the attitude of the band changed the most. We became more professional on "Mysterious..." if I can say that way plus we spent thousands of more time to make "Mysterious..." the way it is. I mean we rehearsed and practiced as much as possible.

Why did you choose the name Castrum (which means "fortified place" in Latin)?
Cornelius - We used this name because of its strong connection to our lyrical conception, which deals with witch-hunts, Holy Inquisition and medieval things in general. Translated from Latin language the meanings of the word "castrum" are fortress, tower, castle, etc. But we like to use it as witch-tower. The second point is because this is the old name of the town where we live (Castrum Ungh).

What are your favourite bands (both metal and non-metal) and how has they inspired you in your music making?
Cornelius - The main musical influences of Castrum are come from Thrash & Death Metal styles. For example bands like Destruction, Sodom, Kreator, Holy Moses, Necronomicon, Hypocrisy, Dissection, At The Gates, Morbid Angel, Asphyx, Dismember, Kataklysm, Death, Grave, Necrophobic, Vader or Cryptopsy to name a few have really influenced us. We admire and respect these bands, but you should take into account that we do not sound or copy any of them. We create our own music and we are trying to be as more original as possible.

Metal bands from Ukraine aren't that common. Why do you think it so and how does
the metal scene look today?
Cornelius - Do you really think so? I would say the scene in Ukraine is growing day by day. There are lots of talented bands over here. To name a few: Nokturnal Mortum (Black Metal), Mental Demise (Brutal Death Metal), Xul (Evil Death/Black Metal), Phantasmagory (Progressive Death Metal), Lucifugum (Black Metal), Astrofaes (Black Metal), Tessaract (Death Metal), Runes Of Dianceht (Black Metal), Fleshgore (Death Metal), Datura (Brutal Death Metal), etc. All they play on quality level their music.

Which live show have been the best you have done so far?
Cornelius - There were lots of good shows done so far, for example the last one in Uzhgorod (29.12.2002), but I still think we should wait for the best one a bit.

What do you do except from playing in Castrum?
Cornelius - Everyone works in different places. Our drummer as a musical teacher in Hungary, our bassist as a house-builder in the Czech Republic and only me is working here in Uzhgorod. Meanwhile I am working as an engineer at the Institute of Electron Physics.
What are your plans for the future? Any gigs planned and when can we expect a new Castrum album?
Cornelius - At the moment we are working on some new stuff. We have about 6 new songs, which are rather fast & aggressive Death Metal tunes. I can definitely say that our music turned to a more technical and brutal kind of Death Metal. By the way, the new album of Castrum is going to be a conceptual one lyrics-wise, of course. It is too early to tell when will it be out, though I can suppose until the end of 2003.

And finally, a classical question. Why did the chicken cross the road?
Cornelius - Maybe the chicken was too drunk and everything went out of control, ha-ha...
