DEINONYCHUS

Det multinationella bandet Deinonychus har för en tid sedan bytt skivbolag och släppt sitt femte album "Mournument". Jag fick en intervju med personen bakom bandet, Marco Kehren, för att höra vad han tycker om albumet och vad som händer med bandet just nu.

Kan du börja med att berätta för de läsare som inte har hört Deinonychus hurudan musik ni spelar samt lite om bandets historia.
Marco - Deinonychus är förkroppsligandet av allt mörker och elände denna världsliga existens har att erbjuda. Vår musik är en blandning av death-doom-black metal med extrem sång och apokalyptiska texter, fängslat i absolut galenskap….. "suicidal metal".
Jag skapade Deinonychus i slutet av1992 och verkade som ett enmans band tills 1999. Då hade jag redan släppt 3 fullängdare och en Mcd. "The Silence Of December"-cd/lp 1995, "The Weeping Of A Thousand Years"-cd 1996, "Ark Of Thought"-cd 1997 och "After The Rain Falls…An Empty Sky Remains"-Mcd 1997 (vilket är en nyutgåva av den första och enda demon på MCD).William Sarginson från England anslöt sig till bandet 1999 och med honom på trummor så spelade vi in albumet "Deinonychus" som släpptes år 2000. Samma år anslöt sig Arkdae från Frankrike till bandet och började spela keyboards och Staff Glover från England på bas. Med denna line-up spelade vi in "Mournument" som egentligen var meningen att skulle bli utgiven via Ars Metalli från Tyskland men istället blev utgiven av MKM på digi-cd och gatefold LP i sept./okt. 2002.

Hur har reaktionerna på ert nyaste album "Mournument" varit hittills?
Marco - Väldigt bra faktiskt, jag tror detta album har fått de bästa reaktionerna av alla tidigare utgivningar. Men sen är detta album också det tajtaste vi gjort. Och även produktionen är utmärkt.

Dina texter är väldigt intressanta men svåra att förstå. Då jag läste dom kom jag att tänka på att de är som dikter eller noveller med ganska många metaforer i dem. Hur skulle du beskriva dina texter och varifrån får du inspirationen?
Marco - Ja, texterna är svåra att förstå men ändå enkelt strukturerade. Men som du sa… Jag använder mig mycket av metaforer och symbolism i mina texter för att ge dem mer känsla och en poetisk prägel. Mina texter behandlar till största delen apokalyptiska teman och död i största allmänhet.
Min inspiration får jag från vardagslivet, religiösa aspekter, idealism och mitt syniska tankesätt!

Ni har gjort en cover på Candlemass låten "Ancient Dreams". Varför valde ni den låten?
Marco - Tillfällighet… vi satt och jammade denna låt ett par gånger och bestämde oss för att spela in den för albumet. Dock måste jag säga att jag beundrar Candlemass väldigt mycket. "Ancient Dreams" är ett av dom bästa doom albumen jag känner till!

Du har förr haft problem med några skivbolag och utgivningen av "Mournument" blev fördröjt i två år. Är du nöjd med My Kingdom Music och vad tycker du att är den största skillnaden mellan MKM och de andra bolagen?
Marco - Ja, jag är väldigt nöjd med MKM. Jag är medveten om att MKM är ett nytt litet skivbolag och måste bygga upp ett rykte på egenhand så de uppenbart inte lika stora som många andra skivbolag och de möter lite distributionssvårigheter. Men MKM verkar vara väldigt ambitiösa och de jobbar hårt för sina band. Så det är därför jag har skrivit kontrakt för två album till med detta skivbolag. Francesco, skivbolagets ägare är även en god väl till mig och det gör samarbetet än mer angenämt.

Den största skillnaden mellan MKM och de andra skivbolagen jag var på är det faktum att MKM inte lovar mig skitsnack, de säger rakt ut vad de kan erbjuda en tills vidare och GÖR vad de säger åt en. En annan sak är att de betalar mig de royalties som är en del av vår överenskommelse. Jag skulle t.ex. ännu egentligen få royalties betalda tid mig för "Ark Of Thought" och "Deinonychus" av både Supernal Music och Ars Metalli men jag har inte ännu fått betalt. Medan t.ex. Supernal ännu säljer "Ark Of Thought" och t.o.m. nyutgav albumet förra året med en annan layout. Sådana skivbolag tror att det är de själva som gör allt arbete men de borde inte glömma att jag har lagt ner mycket tid på Deinonychus och att det inte är en hobby som något annat. En del av saken är den att jag har affärsmässiga överenskommelser mellan Deinonychus och de skivbolagen. Affärer suger…

P.g.a. denna försening så tycker du att albumet ännu låter fräscht och skulle du vilja ändra på något nu när du ser tillbaka på inspelningarna?
Marco - Javisst… Albumet låter fräscht för mig. Det förbluffar mig ännu hur mycket jag tycker om detta album med tanke på att det spelades in för två år sedan. Jag skulle dock kanske ha ändrat några sångrader men generellt sätt så tycker jag om albumet och jag finner det vara en ganska värdefull utgivning. Nuförtiden tycker jag Deinonychus låter mer dunkelt igen…

Det är inte ofta man ser band som har tagit sitt namn från en dinosaurie. Varför detta beslut och vad betyder namnet för dig?
Marco - Namnet Deinonychus tog jag då jag en gång läste en bok om dinosaurier. Denna raptor var en snabb och skicklig dödare och på grekiska betyder Deinonychus "förfärlig klo" då den snittade upp sina byten med sina vassa klor. Det slog mig på något sätt, det är därför jag valt det namnet. Frånsatt det så hänvisar det inte till någon speciell musikstil och inte heller bandnamn. Själva namnet har mindre betydelse för mig nu men själva bandet Deinonychus betyder ganska mycket för mig. Men över det senaste årtiondet har jag känt en viss brist i det hela…

Jag läste att ni ska ut och turnera snart. Kan du berätta lite mer om det?
Marco - Puh ja, det är under planering, en line up är även klar. Vi hoppas att kunna börja snart. Det blir en hård nöt att knäcka då jag aldrig har spelat live med denna line up som består av endast icke Deinonychus musiker. Vi får se vad som händer. Jag tror inte vi kommer iväg före sent denna sommar eller under hösten detta år…

Jag har förstått att du har varit involverad i bandet Bethlehem. Är du ännu en medlem i det bandet och har du några andra band eller projekt just nu? Har någon av de andra medlemmarna i Deinonychus något annat band eller projekt?
Marco - Nej, jag spelar inte i Bethlehem längre. Min sista ansträngning med dom går tillbaka till år 2000. Inte heller håller jag på med några andra projekt men ett har varit under planering i två år nu. Det heter AKFOUR7 och jag vill arbeta tillsammans med Shane Davison från Austalien (ex sångare i Gospel Of The Horns).
William Sarginson vår trummis är upptagen med hans andra band VERO, gör ett album och en video med det bandet. Arkdae släppte nyligen sitt tredje album med det franska bandet Dark Sanctuary, på det albumet gjorde jag några sångfraser. Basisten Staff Glover pysslar med sin black metal på sidan om…

Vad är dina intressen förutom musik?
Marco - Andas luften kring mig…

Vad Vad är era planer för framtiden och när kan vi vänta oss ett nytt album?
Marco - Nytt Deinonychus album, några live aktiviteter och sen pensionering ha haJ Det nya albumet kommer definitivt att vara en förbannelse över de levande…

Och slutligen, en klassisk fråga. Varför korsade kycklingen vägen?
Marco - Kycklingen korsade vägen därför att hon visste att den nära kommande lastbilen skulle döda henne ögonblickligen och att hon inte skulle känna någon smärta. Jag tror att det var i Sigmund Freuds intresse att då jag refererar till kycklingen som hon!?!

DEINONYCHUS
The multinational band Deinonychus have changed record company and released their fifth album a while ago. I got an interview with the person behind the band, Maco Kehren, to hear what he thinks about the album and what is happening within the band at the moment.

Could you first tell the readers that haven't heard Deinonychus what kind of music you play and a little bit of the bands history?
Marco - Deinonychus is the embodiment of all darkness and forlorness this earthly existence has to offer. Our music is a mixture of death-doom-black metal with extreme vocals, and apocalyptic lyrics, captured in absolute madness….. "suicidal metal".
I gave Deinonychus shape in late 1992, and operated as a one-man band until 1999. By that time I released 3 full-length albums and one Mcd. "The Silence Of December"-cd/lp 1995, "The Weeping Of A Thousand Years"-cd 1996, "Ark Of Thought"-cd 1997, and "After The Rain Falls…An Empty Sky Remains"-Mcd 1997 (which is a re-release of the first and only demo on MCD). In 1999 William Sarginson from the Uk joined me on drums, and we recorded the self-titled album "Deinonychus" which got released in 2000. In that very same year Arkdae from France joined Deinonychus on keyboards, and Staff Glover from the UK on bass. With this line-up we recorded the album "Mournument" which supposed to be got released through Ars Metalli from Germany, but instead got released by MKM on digi-cd and gatefold LP in Sept/Oct 2002.

What has been the response on your newest album "Mournument" so far?
Marco - Very well indeed, I think this album gained the best response from all previous releases. But then this album is really the tightest album we made. And the production is excellent as well.

Your lyrics are really interesting but difficult to understand. It came to my mind when I read them that they are like poems or short stories with quite a lot of metaphors in them. How would you describe your lyrics and where do get your inspiration?
Marco - Yes, the lyrics are very hard to understand, but yet simply structured. But as you said…I use a lot of metaphors and symbolism in my lyrics, to give them more spirit and a poetical touch. My lyrics mainly deal with apocalyptic thematics, and death in general.
My inspiration I gain from daily life, religious aspects, idealism and my cynical way of thinking!

You have made a cover on the Candlemass song "Ancient Dreams". Why did you choose that song?
Marco - Coincidence… we jammed this song copule of times, and decided to record it for the album. Though I must say that I admire Candlemass a lot in the first place. "Ancient Dreams" is one of the best doom albums I know!


In the past you have had problems with some labels and the release of "Mournument" was delayed for two years. Are you happy with My Kingdom Music and do what is the main difference between MKM and the other labels?
Marco - Yes I'm very satisfied with MKM. Yet I'm aware of the fact that MKM is a small new label, and has to build up a reputation on it's own, so obviously their not so big as many other labels, and face some distribution difficulties. But MKM seems to be very ambitious, and they work hard for their bands. So, that's why I'm signing for two more albums with this label. Francesco, the owner of the label also is a good friend of mine, and that makes our corporation just that more pleasant.



The main difference between MKM and the other labels I was on; is the fact that MKM doesn't promise me bullshit, they tell you straight to the point what they can offer you for the time being, and DO what they tell you. Another thing is that they pay me the royalties as being part of our agreement. I for instant still should get paid my royalties for "Ark Of Thought" and "Deinonychus" from either Supernal Music and Ars Metalli, but never got paid for that. Whilst for example Supernal still sells "Ark Of Thought", and even re-issued the album last year with a different lay-out. Such labels think that they do all the work themselves, but they shouldn't forget that I invest a lot of time in Deinonychus, and that it simply isn't a hobby like any other. Part of that fact is, that I have business-related agreements with Deinonychus and those labels. Business sucks…

Due to this delay, does the album still sound fresh to you and would you want to change anything on it now when looking back on the recordings?
Marco - Yeah…. The album still sounds fresh to me. It still amazes me how much I like this album, though it has been recorded two years ago. Meanwhile I might have changed some vocal-lines, but overall I like the album the way it is, and find it a rather precious release. Nowadays Deinonychus sounds more obscure again in my opinion….

It's not often that you see bands that have taken the name of a dinosaur. Why this decision and what does the name mean to you?
Marco - The name Deinonychus I took by reading a book about dinosaurs at that time. This raptor was a fast and skilled killer, and in Greek the name Deinonychus means "terrible claw", as it did slash open its prey with its sharp claws. It stroke me somehow, that's why I've chosen this name. Apart from that it doesn't particular refer to any music style, nor a bandname at all. The name itself does have less of a meaning to me now, though as a band, Deinonychus means quite a lot to me. But over the last decade I sense some lack in the whole of it….

I read that you are going to do some touring soon. Please tell me a little bit about that.
Marco - Phew yeah, things are in the planning, a line up is settled as well. We just hope to get started soon. It will be a hard nut to crack, as I never did play live with this line up, which consists out of all non-Deinonychus musicians. We'll see what happen's. I don't think that we'lll get on the road before late summer or autumn this year….

I understand that you are also have been involved in the band Bethlehem. Are you still a member of the band and do you have any other bands or project at the moment? Have any of the other members of Deinonychus got any other bands or project?
Marco - No, I don't play with Bethlehem anymore. My last effort with them goes back to the year 2000. Nor I'm doing any other projects, though one is in the planning for two years now, called AKFOUR7 which I want to do with Shane Davison from Australia (the former vocalist of Gospel Of The Horns).
Well, William Sarginson our drummer is busy with his other band VERO, doing an album and a video for that band. Arkdae just released his third album with the French band Dark Sanctuary, on that album I did some vocal phrases. Staff Glover the bassist is doing his blackmetal stuff besides…

What are your interests except making music?
Marco - Breathing the air around me…

What are your plans for the future and when can we expect a new album?
Marco - New Deinonychus album, some live activities then retiring ha haJ The new album definitely will be a curse upon all the living…

And finally, a classical question. Why did the chicken cross the road?
Marco - The chicken did cross the road, as she knew that the nearby coming truck would kill her instantly, and that she wouldn't suffer any pain. I think it is was all in Sigmund Freud's interest, when I refer to the chicken as a she or not!?!
