Ända sedan jag för många år sedan upptäckte Ministry och industrial metal så har denna stil tilltalat mig och det är alltid kul med nya upptäckter inom denna stil. Det amerikanska bandet Fashion Bomb är visserligen inte ren industrial metal, utan ligger mer mot modern heavy metal, men mycket av känslan i musiken är i stort sett den samma. Detta relativt nya och mycket lovande band har för en tid sedan släppt sin debut ”Angels To Some, Devils To Others” och till min belåtelse tog bandets sångare Val och trummis GreG sig tid att besvara ett par frågor kring bandet och det nya albumet.
Hej Val och DreG! För en tid sedan släppte ni ert första fullängdsalbum “Devils To Some, Angels To Others”, så hur har reaktionerna hittills varit på albumet från fans och media? Är ni personligen nöjda med albumet?
Val – Vi har nyligen släppt albumet och samma stund det började nå ut till människorna så har responsen varit överväldigande positiv. Våra fans hade väntat en tid på att få ett fullängdsalbum och människorna i musikindustrin har älskat det. Jag är personligen väldigt nöjd med resultatet och jag tycker det förkroppsliga riktigt väl det vi står för.
DreG – Jag håller med, reaktionerna har varit fantastiska från både fans och media. Personligen är jag väldigt nöjd med albumet. Jag fick en chans att samproducera och arbeta nära tillsammans med producenten Jamie Duffy (Acumen Nation, DJ Accurack). Vi spenderade timme efter timme att dyka ner i varje detalj kring detta album. Fram till denna dag så kan jag höra varje lilla nyans i låtarna.. det är en rätt fantastisk upplevelse. När allt kommer omkring så är jag stolt över att ha gjort en insats på detta album!
Jag har förstått att åtminstone låten ”The Line” är redan ett par år gammal, så jag gissar att en del annat av materialet på albumet också kan vara ett par år gammalt. Blev ändå allt material till albumet inspelat samtidigt eller använde ni er av äldre inspelningar i processen av att sammanställa ”Devils To Some, Angels To Others”?
DreG – Alla låtar till albumet spelades in samtidigt och alla spelades in vid DreGLanD studios. Med det utrett, så fanns det även ett par låtar som i en eller annan form funnits till under ett par år. Vi spenderade ungefär 6 månader med förproduktion. Under denna tid tog vi några av våra äldre låtar som var värda att behålla och arbetade med att göra dom bättre. Detta inkluderade både drastiska och subtila förändringar i arrangemangen.
Val – För att tillägga så hade vi inte en andra gitarrist förränt för ett år sedan vilken innebar att vi uppnå en mycket rikare och komplett version av varje låt vi hade spelat tidigare. Men som DreG sade så är allt nyinspelat.
Både från albumets titel och från den generella känslan jag får från texterna så vrkar det som om albumet koncentrerar sig mycket kring frågan om personlig identitet och inre kamp i olika former. Är det något ni kan hålla med om eller är jag helt ute och cyklar? Vem är er främsta textskrivare och hur viktiga anser ni att texterna är?
Val – Nej, du slog huvudet på spiken. Jag skriver texterna till låtarna och detta album riktar in sig kraftigt mot det området. Texterna målar upp bilden av de känslor som väcks av musiken och möjliggör en djupare rationalisering av en låt.
DreG – Jag håller med Val, men vill tillägga att det bland oss finns definitivt ett gemensamt yttrande som vi vill sprida. Jag ser detta yttrande som var dig själv. Vi som samhälle kan inte döma människor utifrån deras utseende, men sker konstant. Lär känna människor, ge dem en chans.. du kommer att bli överraskad.
Det finns även en intressant koppling mellan albumets omslag och titeln (samt även idén om att det generella temat på albumet rör personlig identitet). Titeln, ”Devils To Some, Angels To Others” har en religiös ton och det har även omslaget, som jag antar illustrerar er egen version av Nattvarden. Är religion ett ämne ni har starka åsikter om och vad är era tankar kring den nuvarande situationen i världen där religion åter igen mer och mer används för destruktiva handlingar?
DreG – Jag tror på spiritualitet, jag tror på det egna jaget. Vad är religion? Jag tror att införandet av religion var för att locka tillbedjare. Tänk dig kyrkornas kamp hundratals år sedan. Vem än hade den största och mest utsmyckade kyrkan hade även den coolaste religionen. Jag förstår inte det. I jag anser att vi alla borde vara fria att göra som vi vill så länge det inte skadar någon annan. Uppenbarligen är detta något som inte fungerar i vår värld idag!
Val – Detta är något som kunde förvandlas till ett 4 timmar långt episkt tal... Du gör en väldigt god observation och jag skulle vilja säga att jag finner det intressant att varje religion hävdar att just den är den som söker sanning och fred och tolerans, men ändå är det de mest våldsamma krigen som utkämpats i religionens namn och den beklagligaste intoleransen är oftast orsakad av att ens medmänniska har en annorlunda trosuppfattning. Hur mycket bättre skulle vi inte vara om det var globalt och socialt okej att tro på vad man vill, se ut som man vill och kunde utveckla sig själv till vad än som tilltalar en. Jag tror helt enkelt att människor använder religion som ett stöd eller en ursäkt i ett försök att frånsäga sig deras ansvar för deras egna handlingar.
Ni verkar själva sköta om en stor del av albumets marknadsföring, trots att det finns, eller åtminstone har funnit ett samarbete i någon form med Hollywood Records. Vilket slags samarbete är detta och inkluderar detta även finansiellt stöd för distribution och marknadsföring av albumet?
DreG – Vi gjorde en utvecklingsdemo för Hollywood Records för ett par år sedan. Uppenbarligen var detta sist och slutligen inte något som passade oss. Vi arbetar med Superdead Records för att marknadsföra och distribuera vårt album.
Val – Vårt utvecklingskontrakt med Hollywood var en strålande erfarenhet och de finansierade en utmärkt demo. Det Disney-ägda skivbolaget passande helt enkelt inte så bra ihop med våra visioner och vi gick som vänner skilda vägar. Vår marknadsföring hanteras nu av vårt skivbolag Superdead Records och vi själva gör givetvis också mängder med marknadsföring. Vi tror på vårt album, så vi arbetar 110% för att få ut det till alla!
Jag har även lagt märke till att något som heter Superdead Music omnämns här och där. Är det ert eget skivbolag eller är det överhuvudtaget ens ett skivbolag? Jag är lite förvirrad, så ni får nu upplysa mig =)
Val – Javisst, Superdead Records är vårt skivbolag. Det är ett litet indiskivbolag baserat i Chicago och representerar Fashion Bomb. Om Warner Brothers skulle vilja köpa upp skivbolaget, så är jag säker på att de skulle vara idel öra.
DreG – Superdead har gett oss möjligheten att släppa detta album. Vi kan även maximera vår vinst som band... det är väldigt lätt, Superdead får lite och vi får massor! Det sätt det borde vara enligt mitt tycke.
Hur länge har ni egentligen varit tillsammans som ett band? Eftersom ni har redan haft chansen att spela tillsammans med en rad kända band så antar jag att ni har funnits till ett bra tag innan utgivningen av ”Devils To Some, Angels To Others”, men varför tog det så länge innan något egentligt material blev släppt? Eller finns det några äldre demo utgivningar som inte finns med på er hemsida?
DreG – Det har funnits en rad demon under de senaste 3 åren. Dock har bandets line up varit i konstant förändring. Val och jag tog vår tid att finna den rätta kombinationen av musiker för att bära Fashion Bomb vidare. När väl vi hade funnit denna line up så började vi arbeta med albumet. Det tog oss över ett år med albumet från förproduktion till slutlig produkt.
Val – Som DreG sade så har bandet existerat under 3 och ett halv år eller så... och vi har tidigare haft ett par line up förändringar som har hjälpt att öka gruppens kvalité. Denna uppsättning av Fashion Bomb har varit fast över ett år nu och vi är väldigt nöjda med resultatet. Sannerligen var detta katalysatorn till beslutet att släppa ett fullängdsalbum, eftersom detta var den Fashion Bomb vi ville presentera inför världen.
Jag lade märke till att era videor för låtarna ”The Line” och ”SS” har till och med blivit visade på MTV2 och den Chicago baserade JBTV, vilket måste ha varit en trevlig upplevelse för er. Är ni överraskade över hur snabbt saker och ting har gått för er som ett relativt nytt band?
Val – Jag skulle inte kalla det överraskad, utan snarare nöjda. Vi visste att vi hade ett utmärkt material att presentera och vi var ivriga på att dela med oss av det. Vi är tacksamma att några av de större och mycket välkända kanalerna att få ut sin musik inom industrin tackade ja. MTV2 och speciellt JBTV har varit och fortsätter vara väldigt stödjande
DreG – Snabbt är det sätt vi arbetar på. Det har inträffat många utmärka saker för oss under en kort tid och detta är helt enkelt det sätt vi arbetar på.
Hur omfattande publik har ni faktiskt lyckats nå hittills? Är fanbasen främst kring Chicago eller har ni fått landsomfattande uppmärksamhet? Hur är det med områden utanför USA?
DreG – Vi är definitivt världsomfattande. Fanbasen växer för varje dag och med våra kommande turnéer så väntar vi oss att den kommer att växa ännu snabbare!
Val – Precis, vårt växande imperium har blivit globalt. Vi har skickat cd-skivor till Australien, Tyskland, Storbritannien, Frankrike, Mexiko, Sydamerika och över hela USA och Kanada. Vi håller på att nå en rätt så omfattande samling människor, men vi skulle verkligen gilla om alla de som hör om oss och kollar in vår hemsida skulle berätta åt 10 av deras vänner om oss.
Ni har tagit till den gotiska imagen i ert band, trots att musiken är betydligt mer heavy metal orienterad med en industriell touch och ett överlag modernt sound. Är er musikaliska bakgrund inom goth scenen eller finns det någon annan orsak till varför ni har valt denna stil eller image för bandet? Hur trött är ni på de jämförelser med Marilyn Manson som jag antar ni stöter på rätt ofta?
Val – Vår image är faktiskt vem vi är... alla känner sig mycket mer bekväma med något om de kan katalogisera in en i en specifik kategori. Vi är ett metal band och kryddar denna metal med industrial och progressivt sound. Vi valde detta ”utseende” eftersom det valde oss. Det är vad vi är. Vi blir hela tiden jämförda med Manson, men när vi spelade tillsammans med honom en tid sedan under Against All Gods turnén så hade ingen vid showen svårigheter med att skilja oss åt.
DreG – Ironiskt eller hur? Exakt den poäng som vi står för. För ofta antar folk att vi är goth på grund av hur vi ser ut. Sanningen är den att jag växte upp med metal och har aldrig kommit in i den äkta goth musiken. Jämförelserna med MM musikaliskt sett är en komplimang, eftersom vi respekterar det han gjort. Vad gäller utseendet så är det inget nytt för rocken, tänk på KISS, Mushroomhead, Slipknot, Bowie o.s.v.... vi målar en fullständig bild med musiken, imagen och scenframförandet.
Vad är era planer för framtiden rörande Fashion Bomb? Några kommande spelningar och har ni någon aning om när nytt material kan åter igen bli släppt?

Ever since I discovered Ministry and industrial metal many years ago, this style has been one of those I've had great appreciation for and it's always nice with new discoveries within this style. Even though the American band Fashion Bomb isn't pure industrial metal and leans more towards modern heavy metal, they still capture much of the same atmosphere in the music. This relatively new and very promising band did release their debut album “Angels To Some, Devils To Others” some time ago, and to my delight the bands vocalist Val and drummer GreG took the time to answer a few questions regarding the band and the new album.
Hi Val and DreG! Some time ago you released your first full-length album "Devils To Some, Angels To Others", so how has the reactions been so far on the album from the fans and the media? Are you personally happy with the album?
Val – We recently released the album, and the minute it started reaching people the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Our fans had waited for a while to get a full length album, and the industry people have loved it. I am personally very happy with the result, I think it translates very well what we were going for.
DreG – I agree, the reaction has been amazing from both fans and media. Personally, I am very happy with the record. I had a chance to co-produce and work closely with producer Jamie Duffy (Acumen Nation, DJ Accucrack). We spent hours and hours diving into every detail of this record. To this day I will listen and hear the tiny nuances in the songs...it is quite an amazing experience. At the end of the day I am proud to have played a part in this album!
I've understood that at least the song "The Line" has been around for some years now, so I guess that some of the other songs may also be a couple of years old. Was all the material for the album still recorded at the same time or did you use some older recordings in the process of putting "Devils To Some, Angels To Others" together?
DreG – All of the songs were recorded at the same time for this record and all was done in DreGLanD studios. With that said, a few of the songs have been around in some form for a few years. We spent about 6 months in pre-production. At this time we took some of our old songs that were keepers and worked to make them better. This included both drastic and subtle arrangement changes.
Val – To add to that, we didn't have a second guitar player until a year ago, so we were able to achieve a much richer, complete version of any song that we had been playing previously. But, as DreG said, all of it is new recording.
Both from the title of the album and from the general feel I get from the lyrics it seems to me that the album concentrates much around the issue of personal identity and inner struggle in various forms. Is this something you can agree with or am I completely on the wrong track? Who is the main lyric writer in the band and how important to you find the lyrics to be?
Val – No, you hit the nail on the head. I write the lyrics to the songs, and on this record did lean heavily toward that area. Lyrics paint the picture to the emotion stirred by the music, and allows a deeper rationalization of a song.
DreG – I agree with Val, but want to add that there is definitely a common mission statement amongst us. I view this mission statement as be yourself. We can't as a society judge people by their looks, but it happens all of the time. Get to know people, give them a chance..you will be surprised.
There is also an interesting connection with the cover art and the title of the album (as well as the idea that the general theme of the album would be around personal identity). The title "Devils To Some, Angels To Others" have a religious touch to it and so does the cover art, which I guess picture your own version of the Last Supper. Is religion an issue you feel strongly for and what are your thoughts about the current situation in the world where religion once again is more and more used for destructive actions?
DreG – I believe in spirituality, I believe in the self. What is religion? I believe that the inception of religion was to gain worshippers. Think of the battle of the churches hundreds of years ago. Whoever had the biggest most ornate church had the coolest religion. I don't get it. I do believe that all of us should be able to do as we wish as long as it does not harm anyone else. Obviously, this is not working in our world today!
Val – This could turn into a 4 hour epic speech.... You make a very good observation, and I would say that I find it interesting that every religion claims to be one of seeking truth and peace and tolerance, yet the most violent wars were fought in the name of religion, the most grievous intolerance is usually due to the next man believing something different. How much better would we be if it was globally and socially okay to believe whatever you wished, look the way you wished, and were able to make yourself into whatever pleased you. I simply think that people use religion as a crutch or excuse to attempt to excuse themselves for responsibility for their own actions.
You seem to do most of the promotion for the new album yourself, yet there is, or at least have been some kind of a cooperation with Hollywood Records. What kind of a cooperation is this and does this also include some financial support for the distribution and promotion of the album?
DreG – We did a development demo for Hollywood Records a few years back. In the end it was obviously not a fit for us. We work with Superdead Records to promote and distribute our record.
Val – Our development deal with Hollywood was a great experience, and they financed a great demo for us. The Disney owned label simply didn't mesh well with our vision, and we parted friends. Our promotion now is handled by our label, Superdead Records, and we of course do a ton of promo ourselves. We believe in our album, so we are working 110% to get it out to everyone!
Val – Sure, Superdead Records is our label. It is a small indie label based in Chicago, and represents Fashion Bomb. If Warner Brothers wishes to buy the label out, I’m sure they will be all ears.
DreG – Superdead has given us the opportunity to put this album out. We are also able to maximize our profits as a band..it is real simple, Superdead gets a little and we get a lot! The way it should be in my opinion.
How long have you actually been together as a band? Since you have had a chance to play live together with a number of well known bands I guess you have been around for quite awhile before the release of "Devils To Some, Angels To Others", but why did it take you so long to actually get some material released? Or are there some older demo releases that aren't included on your webpage?
DreG – There were several demos over the last 3 years. However, the line up was in a state of flux. Val and I took our time to find the right combination of musicians to carry on Fashion Bomb. Once we found this crew we began work on the record. The record took us over a year from pre-production to final product.
Val – Like DreG said, the band has been around for about 3 and a half years or so... and we have had a few line-up changes in the past that helped improve the quality of the group. This incarnation of Fashion Bomb has been solid for over a year now and we are very happy with the result. That was really the catalyst for the decision to release the full length album, as this was the Fashion Bomb we wanted to present to the world.
I noticed that your videos for the songs "The Line" and "SS" have even been showed on MTV2 and the Chicago based JBTV, which must have been a nice experience for you. Are you surprised with how fast things have gone for you as a relatively new band?
Val – I wouldn't call it surprised as much as pleased. We knew that we had great material to present, and were eager to share it. We are grateful that some of the larger and very well known industry outlets agreed. MTV2 and especially JBTV have been very supportive and continue to be.
DreG – Fast is the way we work. We have had many great things happen to us in a short time, this is just the way we work.
How large audience have you actually managed to reach out to yet? Is the fanbase mostly around Chicago or have you also gained recognition nationwide? How about outside USA?
DreG – We are worldwide for sure. Everyday the fanbase grows and with our upcoming touring we expect it to grow even faster!
Val – Exactly, our growing empire has gone global. We have shipped CDs to Australia, Germany, The UK, France, Mexico, South America and allover the US and Canada. We are reaching quite a crowd, but we would love it if everyone who has heard of us and checks in on our website tells 10 friends about us.
You have adopted the gothic image in the band, yet the music is more heavy metal oriented with industrial touches and an overall modern sound. Is your musical background in the goth scene or are there some other reason why you have chosen this style or image for the band? How tired are you with the comparisons with Marilyn Manson, which I guess you come across quite often?
Val – Our image is really who we are... everyone feels more comfortable about something if they can pigeon-hole you into a certain category. We are a metal band, and flavor that metal with industrial and progressive sounds. We chose this “look” because it chose us. It is what we are. We get compared to Manson all the time, but when we played with him a while ago on the Against All Gods tour, no one at the show had any difficulty telling us apart.
DreG – Ironic isn't it. The exact issue we stand for. To many times people assume we are goth because of the way we look. Truth be told I grew up metal and never really got into the real goth music. The comparisons to MM musically are a compliment, as we respect what he has done. As far as the look, this is not new to rock, think of KISS, Mushroomhead, Slipknot, Bowie, and so on....we paint a full picture with music, image, and stage performance.
What are your plans for the future regarding Fashion Bomb? Any upcoming gigs and have you any idea when some new material will again be released?
Val – We will be playing a lot of shows coming up, and new material is planned for the upcoming months... I recommend signing up for our email list on our website www.fashionbomb.net for all the details!
And finally, a classic question. Why did the chicken cross the road?
DreG – I told him to.
Val – Why did the chicken cross the road? Because Fashion Bomb was playing a concert on the other side...
