Med en imponerande styrka i debutalbumet ”Calling The Earth To Witness” har det svenska bandet Darkwater nu tre år efter grundandet tagit det första steget ut på metalscenen och inom kort bär det även av mot en internationell marknad. Med sin catchiga, men ändå progressiva metal har bandet lyckas väcka intresse hos mig och då tillfället att göra en intervju med bandet dök upp så fanns det inga tveksamheter hos mig att nappa på detta. Keyboardisten Magnus Holmberg blev denna gång mitt intervjuoffer.
Hej Magnus! Ni har för en tid sedan släppt er debut "Calling The Earth To Witness" i Sverige och Norge och snart är det även dags för det europeiska släppet. Hur har reaktionerna hittills varit från fans och media och är ni personligen nöjda med albumet?
Magnus – Hallå! Reaktionerna har övervägande varit mycket positiva. Det är klart att det är kul eftersom vi själva är mycket nöjda med resultatet. Ska bli mycket intressant att se hur det ter sig i Europa.
Har det varit någon markant skillnad mellan mottagandet i Sverige och Norge och vad väntar ni er av det europeiska släppet? Har ni någon bild över hur brett stöd ni har nere på kontinenten och finns det några planer på en mer världsomspännande utgivning också?
Magnus – Det har nog varit ganska likvärdigt, men kanske har svenskarna varit något mer framåt med god kritik.
Vi har väl fått en viss indikation av mottagandet via vår Myspace-sida samt genom de recensioner som kommit in hittills. Där ser läget klart ljust ut. Bara att hålla tummarna att det fortsätter så, med andra ord.
Ja, skivan släpps 28 Augusti i Kanada och 11 September i USA (Ganska vågat datum enligt min mening). I Europa släpps skivan som sagt 31 Augusti. Sen får vi se om det blir andra delar av världen...
Jag måste gratulera er till en riktigt högklassig produktion där ni tagit hjälp av Pelle Seather och Göran Finnberg. Hur kom ni i kontakt med dem och vad var det som gjorde att de kändes som de rätta personerna att sköta mixningen och masteringen? Berätta gärna lite om inspelningssessionerna.
Magnus – Tackar! Vi lyssnade på lite olika skivor i ungefär samma genre och kollade vem som mixat dem. Det blev till slut Pelle då vi tyckte att han gjort ett bra jobb med bl a A.C.T. och hört av andra att det var en bra mixstudio.
Pelle tipsade oss sedan om Göran på Mastering Room. När vi hörde vilka han jobbat med så var det bara att tacka & bocka för tipset!
Vad jag förstått så baseras texterna till rätt stor del på personliga erfarenheter av olika slag, vilket för er naturligtvis torde leda till en lite annorlunda relation till låtarna än om texterna skulle vara fullständigt fiktiva, eller? Anser ni det vara svårare eller lättare att skriva mer personligt kopplade texter än rent fiktiva och vad är texternas viktigaste roll i musiken enligt dig?
Magnus – Klart det blir mer närhet till låtarna om det är så. Det blir ju mer tyngd bakom varje ord och ton som sångaren klämmer ur sig och förhoppningsvis märks det på resultatet.
Det är väl en mix av verklighet och fiktion i texterna men i grunden bygger de på personliga erfarenheter. Inte kanske enbart egna utan kanske framför allt sådant man noterar hos sin direkta och indirekta omgivning. Tyvärr så är ingen av textförfattarna medverkande under denna intervju, så jag försöker göra en sammanfattning av deras inre tankeverksamhet och funderingar, så att säga.
Albumet släpptes genom det relativt unga skivbolaget Ulterium Records, som verkar ha en näsa för nya lovande band inom den mer melodiska metallen. Hur kom ni i kontakt med dem och är ni nöjda med samarbetet? För hur många album är kontraktet?
Magnus – Letade runt lite på nätet och hittade ett par intressanta bolag. Ulterium var mest lyhörda och gav klart bäst respons och verkade vettigast. Sen att det var så närliggande var ju ingen nackdel heller.
Vi är klart nöjda med samarbetet och de är väldigt tillmötesgående. De är mycket bra på att fixa kontakter med olika instanser och bra på PR osv.

Eftersom ni inte verkar ha släppt någon egentlig demo så antar jag att ni har haft en hel del material som legat och väntat på det första albumet eller skrevs materialet efter att ni fått klartecken till att släppa ett album? Finns det ännu äldre material kvar som ni planerar att använda eller blir det att skriva helt nytt material i fortsättningen?
Magnus – Nej, vi hade ingen demo utan tänkte att vi spelar in råmaterialet till en riktig skiva som i sig skulle fungera som en slags demo samtidigt som den skulle vara redo att släppa som den var. Vi resonerade som så att ett skivbolag skulle vara mer intresserade om de hörde en hyfsat högklassig färdig produkt och skulle slippa stå för studiokostnader i första hand.
Sen spelade vi visserligen om allt igen från början ändå, men det berodde helt på att vi själva inte var helt nöjda med resultatet. Drygt beslut just då, men i dagsläget är vi klart nöjda med det beslutet.
Vi hade ganska mycket råmaterial till låtar att välja från innan vi gick till studion, alltså innan vi fick kontraktet, men dessa åtta var väl de vi tyckte stod ut mest.
Det blir nog mest nyskrivet till nästa skiva för att försöka få ett lite fräschare och mer utvecklat sound. Men visst, det finns allt en del godingar i det gamla bagaget att hämta ifrån.
Bandet består till största delen av medlemmar från Harmony med bassisten Karl Wassholm som det enda undantaget. Hur delar ni upp tiden mellan dessa två band och vad var den ursprungliga tanken med att starta upp Darkwater?
Magnus – I början var det inga större problem då de sällan krockade med varandra med t ex konserter och skivinspelningar. Men det är klart, det börjar ju bli lite "värre" på den punkten. Får försöka dela upp kakan så gott det går. Sen gör det ju saken lite lättare att det som sagt nästan är samma uppställning, med tanke på rep, samspelthet osv.
Det går i perioder faktiskt. Ibland blir det mest Darkwater, ibland mest Harmony. Nu är det ganska mycket båda banden eftersom vi framöver ska iväg på lite spelningar med DW samtidigt som vi håller på för fullt med skivinspelning med nästa Harmony-album.
Tanken på båda banden uppkom nog nästan samtidigt faktiskt med tanke på lite olika musikaliska inriktningar bland medlemmarna i bandet. I ena bandet är ett par bandmedlemmar mer aktiva och i det andra är det ett par andra. Dock finns ingen ambition att splittra på oss och gå åt varsitt håll.
Markus Sigfridsson spelar även i 7 Days och Henrik Båth har varit inblandad som sångare i Bobby Ferraras soloprojekt Night Watch, så jag antar att musiken tar upp stora delar av er lediga tid? Vad har du för övrig musikalisk bakgrund och kommer du ihåg hur ditt första musikaliska framträdande var? En fullständig mardröm eller ett glatt minne?
Magnus – Ja, visst gör den det! Men det är ju en genuint intresse, och sådant får ju gärna stjäla lite tid. Tja, började faktiskt min karriär i lågstadiet med att spela fiol men bytte efter ett par år till att haka på en elorgelkurs hos den lokala musikinstrumentshandlaren. Höll väl på med det ett par år också innan man gick över till lite mer åt keyboard-hållet.
De första fiolframträdandena kändes väl mest lite "påtvingade" av föräldrar och musiklärare, så de var alltid lite jobbiga och kallsvettiga :)
Den första hårdrocksspelningen däremot gick väldigt bra. Det var någon gång i slutet av gymnasiet. Den framfördes i en gammal biograf här i Borås. Det värmer lite grann att tänka tillbaka på...
Vad gillar ni att göra utanför den musikaliska arenan? Några oväntade och lustiga detaljer rörande dina bandkamrater som du känner att du vill sprida kunskap om?
Magnus – Hehe, vi är nog ganska olika som personer i bandet.
Vi har ett sportfreak som gärna kollar på Simpsons, en ansvarsfull husägare som bara vill snickra på kåken och spela tennis, en förkämpe för kulturen som gärna spelar teater, musikaler och i diverse etniska musikaliska sammanhang, en gymmande livsnjutare som gärna tar dagen som den kommer...och så jag då ;)
Vem som är vem får vänta till någon annan gång... ;)
Sångaren vann för övrigt stadens största talangjakt här i Borås för ett antal år sen.
Den första utgivningen ni var inblandade i var en cover platta tillägnat Sweet där ni bidrog med er version på låten "Shot Down In Flames". Hur kom det sig att ni blev inblandade i denna utgivning och varför valde ni just denna låt? Är covers något ni generellt gillar att göra?
Magnus – Det var Christian Rivel (från Narnia) som vid tillfället just startat eget skivbolag (Rivel Records) och eftersom vi spelat tillsammans några gånger på diverse småfestivaler och dylikt så frågade han oss om vi ville medverka.
Den låten tilltalade oss helt enkelt mest och vi kände att det fanns mycket utrymme för egen tolkning.
Nja, det råder lite delade meningar om det i bandet, men vi kör inte gärna covers utan vill helst förmedla vårt eget material. Men det var en rolig låt att spela in.
Vad har ni för planer inför framtiden rörande Darkwater? Några kommande spelningar eller turnéer och när kan vi vänta oss att något nytt material kan komma att släppas?
Magnus – Tja, eftersom debuten ganska nyligen har släppts så får vi helt enkelt se vartåt det bär, men ambitionen är ju att komma ut och spela så mycket som möjligt. Vi har några få spelningar här och där, men inget större på gång än. Vi inväntar Europa-releasen och försöker satsa på någon turné eller ströspelningar utifrån det.
Ska som sagt få klart Harmony-plattan i nuläget, men efter det kan det nog börja filas på nästa DW-skiva förhoppningsvis.
Och slutligen, en klassisk fråga. Varför korsade kycklingen vägen?
Magnus – För att den skulle springa och köpa debutskivan med det utomordentligt innovativa och mustigt mystiska bandet som försöker erövra världen med sina trallvänliga men samtidigt så melankoliska melodier. Allt ackompanjerat av ett par relativt ondsinta gitarrer, en halvilsken trumma, en envist kämpande och övertygande bas samt lite symfoniska och bitterljuva keyboardinslag.

We are quite different as individuals in the band

With an impressive strength in the debut album “Calling The Earth To Witness” the Swedish band Darkwater has now three years after the foundation taken the first step out towards the metal scene and soon the band will also head out to take on the international market. With their catchy, yet progressive metal the band has managed to stir up some interest from me and when the opportunity came to conduct an interview with the band, it wasn’t difficult to get me hooked. The keyboardist Magnus Holmberg was to be my interview victim.
Hi Magnus! For some time ago you released your debut “Calling The Earth To Witness” in Sweden and Norway and soon it’s also time for the European release. How have the reactions been so far from fans and media and are you personally pleased with the album?
Magnus – Hello! The reactions have for most part been very positive. Of course it’s fun since we are also very pleased with the result. It will be very interesting to see how it goes in Europe.
Have there been any major differences between Sweden and Norway in the way the album have been received and what do you expect from the European release? Do you have any idea of how widespread support you have down on the continent and are there any plans for a more worldwide too?
Magnus – I guess it has been quite the same, but maybe the Swedes have been a bit more forward with good critique.
We have received some indications of the reception through our Myspace-site and through the reviews that we have received up to this point. Things are looking really bright over there. We just hope that it will continue that way.
Yes, the album will be released August 28th in Canada and September 11th in USA (a quite daring date in my mind). In Europe the release is as mentioned August 31st. After that we’ll see if the album will also be released in other parts of the world...
I must congratulate you on the superb production, in which you have used the help by Pelle Seather and Göran Finnberg. How did you get in contact with them and what was it that med you think that they would be the right guys to do the mixing and mastering? Please tell me a bit about the recording sessions.
Magnus – Thanks! We listened to some different albums within pretty much the same genre and had an eye on who had done the mixing on them. At the end we chose Pelle since we thought he had done a good job with A.C.T. for example and we had also heard from others that it was a good mixing studio.
Pelle then suggested Göran at Mastering Room. When we heard who he had worked with we became very thankful for that suggestion!
If I’ve understood everything correctly the lyrics are based to a quite large extent on personal experiences of various forms, which would naturally mean that you have a somewhat different relationship towards the lyrics compared to what would be the case if the lyrics would be completely fictive, right? Do you find it more difficult or easier to write more personally connected lyrics rather than purely fictive and what do you think is the main objective for the lyrics in the music?
Magnus – Of course you get closer to the lyrics if they are more personal. There are more weight behind every word and tone that the vocalist utters and hopefully this is noticeable in the end result. I guess it’s a mix of reality and fiction in the lyrics, but the core of the lyrics are based on personal experiences. Maybe not always our own, but maybe more those things you have registered in your direct or indirect surroundings. Unfortunately non of the lyric writers are present in this interview, so I try to summarize their inner thoughts so to say.
The album is released through the relatively young label Ulterium Records that seems to have an ability to find new and promising bands within the more melodic metal. How did you come in contact with them and are you pleased with the cooperation? For how many albums is the deal?
Magnus – We were looking around on the web and found a couple of interesting labels. Ulterium was the one with the most keen ear and gave without a doubt the best response and seemed to be the most sensible. That they were for us so close to home wasn’t directly a downside either.
We are definitely happy with the cooperation and they are very accommodative. They are very good at setting up contacts with various forums and on PR and so on.
The deal is for this album.
Since you don’t seem to have released a real demo, I guess that you have had quite a lot of material laying around waiting for the first album or did you write the material after you had gotten the green light for releasing an album? Are there still older material left that you plan to use sometime in the future or do you want to just write new material from now on?
Magnus – No, we had no demo since we decided to record the raw material to a complete album that would sort of work as a demo at the same time as it would be ready for a release in its current form. We reasoned that a label would be more interested if they would hear complete product of a quite high level of quality and that they wouldn’t have to primarily come up with the money for studio sessions.
Nevertheless, we later re-recorded all the material, but that was only because we didn’t feel completely satisfied with the result. At that point it was a unpleasant decision, but today we are definitely happy that we took that decision.
We had quite a lot of raw material for songs to choose from before we entered the studio, in other words before we got signed, but these eight I guess where the ones we though stood out the most.
It will probably be mostly newly written material on the next album as we try to get a more fresh and developed sound. But sure, there are always some treats left to be used from the old bagage.
The band mostly consists of members from Harmony with the bassist Karl Wassholm as the only exception. How do you divide your time between these two band and what was the original idea to why you wanted to set up Darkwater?
Magnus – In the beginning there where no major problems since it rarely happened that we had for example live shows and album recordings at the same time. But it’s true, it is beginning to become more tricky in this area. We just have to try to cut up the cake as best as we can. It do get a bit easier since, as mentioned, it’s almost the same line up in the two bands and this helps with things like repetitions, how tightly we can play and so on.
I really do depend on which period we’re in. Sometimes it becomes mostly Darkwater, somethimes mostly Harmony. Currently it’s quite much with both bands since we’ll soon go off and do some DW shows at the same time as we are busy with the recordings of the next Harmony album.
The thought of both bands came pretty much simultaneously when considering the slightly different musical directions among the band members. In one of the band there are couple of members who are more active and in the other one it’s a couple of other members. However, we don’t have any ambitions towards splitting up and going separate ways.
Markus Sigfridsson is also playing in 7 Day and Henrik Båth has been involved as a vocalist in Bobby Ferrara's solo project Night Watch, so I guess that the music takes up much of your spare time? What kind of musical background do you have and do you remember how your first musical performance was? A complete nightmare or a cheerful memory?
Magnus – Yes, it absolutely do! But it’s a genuine interest and those may very well steal some time. Well, I actually begun my career in primary school with playing the violin, but after a couple of years I changed direction by joining an electric organ class that was held by the local musical instrument salesman. I guess I continued playing that for a couple of years before I turned more towards a keyboard oriented direction.
The first violin performances was mostly quite “forced” by parents and music teachers, so they were always a bit unpleasant and nerve-raking.
The first hardrock show went really well though. That took place sometime during the final period of my time in the gymnasium. That show was held in an old movie theatre here in Borås. It’s really quite nice to think back at it...
What do you like to do outside the musical arena? Some unexpected and amusing details regarding your band mates that you feel you would like to share?
Magnus – Hehe, I guess we are quite different as individuals in the band.
We have one sport freak that likes to watch Simpsons, one responsible house owner that just wants to work with his house and play tennis, one champion of culture that enjoys being involved in theatre, musicals and various ethnic musical contexts, one life enjoyer that likes to work out and takes the day as it comes...and then me ;)
Who is who can wait for some other time... ;)
The vocalist did by the way win the biggest talent contest here in Borås a number of years ago.
The first release you were involved in was a cover record that payed tribute to Sweet in which you contributed with your version on the song “Shot Down In Flames”. How did you get involved in this release and why did you chose this particular song? Are covers something that you generally enjoy doing?
Magnus – It was Christian Rivel (from Narnia) that at that time had just launched his own label (Rivel Records) and since we had played together a few times at some minor festivals and such he asked us if we wanted to participate.
That song simply attracted us the most and we felt that there were plenty of room for our own interpretation.
Well, there are different views about that in the band, but we usually don’t want to play covers since we mostly want to provide our own material. But it was a fun song to record.
What are your plans for the future regarding Darkwater? Any upcoming gigs or tours and when can we expect to see some new material to be released?
Magnus – Well, since the debut has quite recently been released we just have to wait and see where we end up, but the ambition is to come out on the road and play live as much as possible. We have a few shows here and there, but nothing bigger right now. We await the European release and try to get a tour or single shows in connection to that.
As mentioned we shall now finish our work with the Harmony album, but after that we may start working on the next DW album, at least I hope so.
And finally, a classic question. Why did the chicken cross the road?
Magnus – Since it would run and buy the debut album by the superbly innovative and richly mysterious band that tries to conquer the work with their sing-along friendly, yet melancholic, melodies. Everything accompanied by a couple of relatively evil guitars, a semi-angry drum, a stubbornly fighting and convincing bass and some symphonic and bittersweet keyboard elements.

Magnus – Do as the chicken; run to your local record dealer and buy the album! Then sit down comfortably with a glass of lemonade, your cosiest slippers and a set of headphones and let the album sink in. Or invite all your friends and let the album be played at top volume until you almost get thrown out from your apartment, the choice is yours (as long as you buy the album) ;)
