Ur askan av Ravenger steg det mexikanska death metal bandet Hacavitz fram år 2003 och efter en Mcd släpptes tidigare detta år deras första fullängdare "Venganza". Med influenser från bland annat forna centralamerikanska kulturer och ockultism står bandet med båda fötterna i death metallen, men har även inkorporerat mycket av black metallens atmosfär i musiken. Jag fick chansen att ställa ett par frågor till bandet och deras trummis Oscar Garcia var vänlig nog att stilla min nyfikenhet rörande bandet.

Hej Oscar! Ert debutalbum "Venganza" släpptes för ett par månader sedan och utifrån vad jag har sett så har den fått rätt många goda recensioner. Hur tycker du att det allmänna mottagandet har varit från fansen och media, och är du personligen nöjd med albumet?
Oscar - Hej och till att börja med tack för intervjun. Ja, vi är fullständigt nöjda med det slutliga resultatet vi fick på vår debut. Vi arbetade väldigt hårt med skapandet av låtarna och jag har många gånger sagt att "Venganza" är det album vi alltid har velat spela in. Reaktionerna som albumet har fått och ännu får överallt gör oss naturligtvis väldigt stolta och glada.

Ni har på albumet lyckats kombinerat death metallens brutalitet med black metallens mörka atmosfär på ett utmärkt sätt, men var denna blandning ett medvetet val eller formades musiken omedvetet mot denna riktning?
Oscar - Nej, absolut inte. Bandets låtskrivande har varit väldigt naturlig och aldrig planerad, vi spelar vårt material som vi känner det och denna arbetsmetod kommer vi att behålla. Processen av låtskrivande är i allmänhet mycket snabb.

Vad tycker du personligen om death och black metal och vad har du för tankar rörande dessa två stilars utveckling, både i Mexiko och i resten av världen?
Oscar - Båda stilar är de jag främst gillar, jag tycker om dessa aggressiva, obskyra och snabba skapelser!! Det finns inga hinder för skapandet av musik, nu för tiden har band så stor variation i de influenser som kan uppfattas i blandningen av sound och stilar. Jag gillar denna mörka death metal helvetiskt mycket!!

Ni spelade in albumet vid Inzonik Studios tillsammans med Carlos Padilla. Berätta gärna lite om inspelningssessionerna och varför ni valde Inzonik Studios. Är ni nöjda med det arbete Carlos utförde?
Oscar - Vi använder Inzonik Studios eftersom det är den bästa studion för metal i Mexiko, åtminstone enligt mig. Carlos är en briljant ljudtekniker och en väldigt kreativ kille och vi känner honom sedan flera år tillbaka så det var bekvämt för bandet att arbeta där. Inspelningen av albumet tog ca en och en halv vecka och egentligen var sessionerna de bästa vi genomgått. Mixandet och mastering processen slutfördes ungefär på två veckor.

Av vad jag förstått så lämnade er bassist Antonio Nolasco bandet efter inspelningen av "Venganza", men vad var orsaken till detta och letar ni nu aktivt efter en ersättare?
Oscar - Tja, orsaken var att han inte kunde hantera Hacavitz aktiviteter samtidigt som han skulle verkställa de kompromisser gentemot hans originalband, The Pit. Han hade även tidsbekymmer med sitt jobb, så han beslöt att sluta för att undvika problem i allmänhet. Vi är inte säkra om vi ska leta efter en ersättare, utan troligtvis kommer Hacavitz att fortsätta som en grupp av tre och för turnéer kan vi använda oss av gästmusiker.

För utgivningen av "Venganza" skrev ni ett kontrakt med Moribund Records för två album. Hur kom det sig att ni valde Moribund och är ni nöjda med samarbetet så här långt?
Oscar - Vi är fullständigt nöjda med samarbetet med Moribund Records arbete, vi känner att bandet blir på alla sätt stöttat och det är vad ett underground band behöver. De är utmärkta människor som finner glädje i att arbeta för deras trupper!! Respekt!!! Antimo (sångare & gitarrist) var sedan en tid tillbaka i kontakt med Odin, så vi skickade en kopia av albumet till dem då vi var på jakt efter ett nytt skivbolag, vilket resulterade i att de blev mycket intresserade av att släppa albumet. Samstämmigt beslöt vi oss genast för att skriva kontrakt med dem för två album.

Vilka nyttiga erfarenheter rörande Hacavitz tycker du personligen att ni fått genom att tidigare vara inblandade i dessa olika band, förutom att bli bättre på att spela era instrument naturligtvis?
Oscar - Vi har lärt oss under åren om: attityd, förpliktelse, respekt, ära, hängivenhet, sann begäran…. detta är vad som håller Hacavitz stående och det är på grund av detta som vi ville fortsätta tillsammans och förverkliga den ultimata överenskommelsen.

Personligen tycker jag det är intressant att höra vad människorna bakom olika band har för sysselsättning förutom att skapa musik, så vad uppehåller ni er med då ni inte spelar i bandet?
Oscar - Tja, låt oss se. Antimo arbetar i en nattklubb som säkerhetsansvarig för stället, Eduardo verkar sköta något familjeföretag i Mexico City och jag själv har just avslutat min bana vid universitetet. Det är allt!

Jag lade märke till att ni för en tid sedan genomförde en rätt omfattande turné i Mexiko, gick allt som ni hade hoppats? Vad kan folk vänta sig av en Hacavitz spelning?
Oscar - Vi har redan gjort 15 datum, två är fortfarande på kommande under följande veckor. Vi är väldigt tacksamma mot alla de människor bakom organisationen av varje spelning och givetvis hyllar vi alla de galningar som stödde våra spelningar och gjorde denna turné för att marknadsföra albumet helt galen. Vi fick varje kväll en strålande mottagning och vi kan inte vänta att göra det igen inför kommande album.
En Hacavitz spelning är snabb och mörk.

Vad har ni för framtidsplaner rörande Hacavitz? Några kommande spelningar och när kan vi vänta oss att något nytt material blir släppt?
Oscar - Det finns en till turné som väntar, men jag vill ännu hålla tillbaka infon. Nästa vecka kan vi troligen bekräfta och slutligen meddela officiellt vad som sker rörande detta. Vi kommer att fortsätta med skrivandeprocessen inför nästa album som vi planerar kunna spela in före årets slut och vi kommer kanske att förbereda ett par splits också. From the ashes of Ravenger stepped the Mexican death metal band Hacavitz out in 2003 and after a Mcd the band released earlier this year their first full-length album "Venganza". With influences from areas like the ancient cultures of Central America and occultism the band stands with their both feet in death metal, but has also incorporated much of the atmosphere in black metal to their music. I got the chance to ask a few questions regarding the band and their drummer Oscar Garcia was kind enough to answer these.

Hi Oscar! Your debut album "Venganza" has been released a couple of moths ago and from what I've seen you have gotten quite many good reviews. How do you feel the general response has been on the album from the media and the fans, and are you personally satisfied with the album?
Oscar - Hell-o and firstly thanks for the interview. Yes we're totally satisfied with the final result we got for our debut release, we worked very hard during the creation of the songs, I've said many times that "Venganza" is the album we always wanted to record. The response that the album got and is still receiving everywhere makes us really proud and happy of course.

You have really successfully combined the brutality of death metal and the grim atmosphere of black metal on the album, but was this mix a conscious decision of did the music just turn up this way?
Oscar - Absolutely no, the song's composition of the band has been very natural and never planned, we play our stuff as we feel it and we keep this way of work.
The writing process is fast in general.

What do you personally think of death and black metal and what are your thoughts about how these styles have evolved, both in Mexico and the rest of the world?
Oscar - Both styles are the most I enjoy, I like these agressive, obscure and fast stuffs!!
There is no barriers for the creation of music, nowadays the band's influences has so much variety that is comprensible the mixture of sounds and styles.
I like these blackened death metal, hell yes!!

You recorded the album at Inzonik Studios together with the producer Carlos Padilla. Please tell me a little bit about the recording sessions and why you choice Inzonik Studios. Are you pleased with the work of Carlos?
Oscar - We use Inzonik Studios because is the best studio for metal in Mexico, at least in my opinion, Carlos is a brilliant sound engineer and very creative guy, we know him since years so its very comfortable for the band to work there. The record of the album took like one and a half week, the sessions were the best we've had really, the mix and mastering process was finished in 2 weeks more aproximately.

From what I've understand your bass player Antonio Nolasco left the band after the recordings of "Veganza", but what was the reason for this and are you actively searching for a replacement?
Oscar - Well the reason is that he could not handle the activities with Hacavitz and carry out with the compromises of his original band The Pit, also he had matters of time with his Job, so he decided to quit and avoid problems in general. We're not sure if we gonna search for a replacement, probably Hacavitz stays as three pieces band and for any tour we can use a guest musician.

For the release of "Venganza" you signed a two-album deal with Moribund Records. How did you end up at Moribund and are you pleased with the cooperation so far?
Oscar - We're totally satisfied with the work from Moribund Records, we feel the band supported in any sense and thats what the underground acts needs, they are great persons and enjoy working for his troops!! Respect!!! Antimo (vocalist & guitarist) used to be in touch with Odin since a while, so at time we were looking for a new recording label we sent an advance of the album and they resulted very interested releasing it, immediately we accorded to sign for two albums with them.

What useful experiences regarding Hacavitz do you personally think you have gained from having been involved in these various bands in the past, except from getting better at using your instruments of course?
Oscar - We've learned through the years about: Attitude, Commitment, Respect, Honor, Dedication, Real Desire.... this is what keeps Hacavitz standing up, and due to this is why we wanted to stay together and make happen the Ultimate Covenant.

Personally I think it's interesting to see what the people behind various bands have for occupations except for creating music, so what do you guys occupy yourself with when not playing in the band?
Oscar - Well lets see, Antimo works in a night club in charge of the security of the place, Eduardo seems to run some familiar business at Mexico city and I just finished my career at the university. Thats it!

I noticed that some time ago you did a quite large tour in Mexico, did everything go as you had hoped? What can people expect from a Hacavitz show?
Oscar - We already did 15 dates, there are 2 more to do left in the upcoming weeks, we're very grateful with all the people behind the organization of every show, of course we hail these crazy maniacs assisting to the gigs and made of this an insane tour for the album promotion, we got every night a killer response and cant wait to do it again for the upcoming album.
Hacavitz show is fast and somberly.

What are your plans for the future regarding Hacavitz? Any upcoming gigs and when can we expect some new material to be released?
Oscar - There's another tour waiting to be done, but I want to still hold the info. Probably the next week we can confirm and finally announce officially whats happening on this. We gonna continue with the writing process of the second album that we plan to record before this year be finished and maybe we're preapring a couple of splits too. And finally, a classical question. Why did the chicken cross the road?
Oscar - Because in the other side of the road there was something interesting for the instinct of the god damned chicken.... :S
